What glaucoma is

  • Omega‑3 from oily fish or selected sources: an adequate intake of omega‑3 fatty acids is associated with a more favourable vascular profile.
  • Moderate dark chocolate intake: some studies suggest that cocoa flavonoids and polyphenols may positively influence endothelial function and microcirculation, within an overall healthy lifestyle.
  • Regular physical activity: walking, cycling or swimming, adapted to individual conditions, improves circulation and contributes to better systemic blood pressure control, with potential benefits for the eye.

Key diagnostic tests

Diagnosing and following glaucoma cannot rely on pressure measurement alone. Comprehensive evaluation of the optic nerve requires both structural and functional tests.

OCT (optical coherence tomography)

A non‑invasive scan that analyses retinal nerve fibre and ganglion cell layer thickness, as well as the optic nerve head. It can reveal early structural changes, sometimes even before visual field defects appear.

Computerised visual field

Measures light sensitivity at different points of the visual field and detects peripheral or paracentral defects that patients are often unaware of. It is essential for monitoring disease progression over time.

Pachymetry and corneal assessment

Central corneal thickness is measured by pachymetry and is important for correctly interpreting intraocular pressure readings. Very thin or thick corneas can lead to under‑ or overestimation of measured values.

If left undiagnosed and untreated, glaucoma can cause significant visual loss. When detected early, monitored regularly and treated appropriately, most patients maintain good visual function for many years.

For many patients, topical drops are the mainstay of therapy and can be effective long‑term if used consistently. In other cases, despite good adherence, laser or surgery may be needed; the decision depends on glaucoma type, age and disease behaviour over time.
